For reasons I still can’t fully explain, I began photographing this dead tree on my way to the studio. Each day, the first time I passed it, I would take a picture. It felt, in a way, like greeting an old friend. Perhaps I was drawn to the fact that it seemed both dead and alive at the same time.

There are gaps in the timeline. Some weeks I didn’t bother taking the photograph—something I now regret—and there were interruptions due to holidays. The intention was to continue for at least a year, or until I had to leave the studio. But fate, in the form of the park services, had other plans.
